Release 70

Alex Pankratov :

Aug 15, 2014

New features

1. Added support for configuring network share credentials
https://bvckup2.com/support/forum/topic/413

2.  Added command-line control of the backups
https://bvckup2.com/support/forum/topic/411

3. Further reduced run-time memory usage -- reworked code a bit to reduce the size of an internal structure that holds per-file and per-folder information from 132 to 112 bytes. Not much in itself, but it quickly adds up to a good number when there's a lot of files.

Issues resolved

1. Fixed an issue with the network share monitoring logic - when the backup was enabled, the app wouldn't start monitoring *destination* network location, only the source one.

2. Fixed an issue with the log synching in service mode - repeatedly opening and closing the UI when running in service mode could mess up UI's copy of the logs in certain cases.

3.  Fixed several smaller UI issues - in particular, the UI panicked when a backup type was changed from real-time to periodic in a certain way.

Other changes

1. It's now possible to force a backup of unmodified files
https://bvckup2.com/support/forum/topic/415

2. Start/finish times are now available to post-backup commands
In addition to existing BVCKUP_xxx environment variables, the app now also sets up BVCKUP_time_started, BVCKUP_time_finished and BVCKUP_time_taken variable to provide some timing information about a run.
Past details - https://bvckup2.com/support/forum/topic/98

3. Main window and log viewer are now stylable via .ini - it's now possible to adjust colors and certain metrics of the main list and the log viewer. I will be documenting this separately in a bit.

4. Windows is now asked to suppress external CRL checks - this has to do with checking digital signatures on app's own executable and on downloaded update packages. Bvckup now sets a flag that should - in theory - suppress any network activity that Windows' wintrust.dll may do on behalf of the app, but sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't.

Excellent! Thank you.

Thanks for the update.Any chance of including export and import jobs feature in the software?

Alex Pankratov :

Noted, let me see what I can do.
Meanwhile there's a way to keep a secondary copy of your bvckup2 config, just in case - https://bvckup2.com/support/forum/topic/139/972

"Main window and log viewer are now stylable via .ini - it's now possible to adjust colors and certain metrics of the main list and the log viewer. "
Great! I hope it can slim the height of each backup. I did a request post back in the beta about a way to disable the text "Awaiting a Go command". Any chance there'll be an ini option for that? When you only have a few backup jobs extra text like that is ok. But when I use it with 10+ backups it adds up to clutter that makes it harder to get a very quick overview of what backups in the list to run at the moment.

I hope it can slim the height of each backup

To shrink the list vertically you will need to add the following incantations to %LocalAppData%\Bvckup2\ui\bvckup2-ui -

   style.list.item_padding 11,22,33,44
   style.list.line_spacing  55

whereby 11, 22, 33, 44 are padding values in pixels for left, top, right and bottom sides of each list item. The defaults are 12, 8, 12, 8.

55 is the vertical spacing between top and bottom lines in each tile. The default is 4.

So, you'd need to shutdown the app, open the .ini, add above lines, save the .ini and start bvckup again. There's also a bunch of other styling options, but nearly all of them are for colors rather than the geometry.

a way to disable the text "Awaiting a Go command"

Would color-coding tiles instead work? There is an open request for this and I am planning to add it into the next release or the one after.

Yay, it works. Though the ini seems to want the item_padding values space separated, not comma.
Color-coding tiles would be useful to visually make out sets of jobs. But the clutter from repeated text is a separate concern for me. The "awaiting a go" text and also the "no errors" text multiply into a distraction. Re "no error": I think it makes sense to prompt on errors, since users then likely want to investigate and/or retry the backup. But when a job has finished and all went well then I need no text telling me that explicitly. A lack of error prompts is enough to communicate that. Of course I get if some other people's prompt preferences push for perpetual pluralities of powerful promptings. But when you add ini options for visuals I think the option I suggest would make sense.

Have I got a present for you ... Just add

    show_no_errors   0

to bvckup2-ui.ini and see what happens :)

Any progress on documenting the following?

". Main window and log viewer are now stylable via .ini - it's now possible to adjust colors and certain metrics of the main list and the log viewer. I will be documenting this separately in a bit."

Thanks.

Thanks Alex.  Plenty to digest and experiment with there.
