Backup grouping -- coming up in R75

Alex Pankratov :

Jul 15, 2015

Finally got around to implementing collapsible backup groups in the UI.
Here's a couple of sketches of the UI details -

1.
https://bvckup2.com/wip/r75-groups-r2-a.png -- collapsed
https://bvckup2.com/wip/r75-groups-r2-b.png -- expanded

2.

https://bvckup2.com/wip/r75-groups-r1-b.png -- expanded

Thoughts?

The + sign is used much more for expandable groups although I do like the BAR.  The + would be better with a small CIRCLE or BOX around it.

Alex Pankratov :

Having circle/box adds 2px on each side. It will require pushing the text to the right and I'd rather not do that.

Here's today's pass - https://bvckup2.com/wip/r75-groups.gif

I think it's pretty much there...

Lurch :

I like the bar, fits in quite well with the sleek UI. The + is too 'angular' and non smooth, although the dropdown is better on the later version then the earlier one.

Froggie :

:-)  OK, a pixel here and a pixel there are a problem... I like them both, anyway  (actually... I love the app no matter what it looks like)

I liked the arrow head after the backup group name  - maybe having left and right ponting arrowheads to signify expand/contract rather than the down version. Of course you might have to trim the name of the backup group if there is no room ....

Thank you, gentlemen. All noted.

How about this one -

https://bvckup2.com/wip/r75-groups-r4-a.png  --  collapsed
https://bvckup2.com/wip/r75-groups-r4-b.png  --  expanded

* There are certain implementation difficulties with the tabbed version, though it's the one I personally like the best.

Lurch :

Jul 19, 2015

I think the problem with the tabbed one is that the + and the arrow on the tab are not only completely different but located on different sides of the heading. It would probably be better with the arrow on the right pointing right or down for hidden/collapsed I would think (or possibly same arrow, different colours)?

I wouldn't say any of the other ones were particularly wrong or garish in any way, they are all pretty sleek in one way or another. I still like r1 though. ;)

Personally I think just the '+' is little to small to actually notice (to thin).
I actually like the black bar with the tab interface.
Perhaps a more subtle bar + additional info beneath the group name "+ (backup group)    (x jobs)" would be nice?

Looking forward to this feature!

Of the posted sketches I prefer the +

Have you ruled out using bolded text or a background color for the group parent row?

Alex Pankratov :

Feb 19, 2016

No, I haven't. The simplest thing to do would be to make this customizable through the INI.

That said, the grouping is not going to be in the next release. R75 has already accumulated a lot of big changes, so squeezing the grouping in will really push it into an uncomfortable zone.

Bamit :

Alex,

In addition to the new grouping option, we will be able to change or re-order the jobs list?

For example, I have 22 different backup jobs in my list.  Each corresponding to their individual .ini files located in each of their prospective CFG folders

Example:   ..\Bvckup2\Cfg\engine\backup-0001 through ..-0022

Many of the different jobs which I had created as needed were done over a several month period. Some of the backup jobs (like music files etc.) relate to each other, but are unfortunately listed numerically (in between, lets say, document files) as they were created.

In other words, will we be able to simply drag or move the items in the job lists around, or will all jobs have to be recreated in the order you want them to achieve this?

Thanks

MWorthington :

Can't you drag them now in the UI?

Froggie :

Apr 30, 2016

I sure can...

Bamit :

Apr 30, 2016

Yes, you both are correct.  Going back for coffee now, pay no attention to me.  Feeling stupid.......

Froggie :

Bamit, Bamit!  I'm glad you got it... it slipped in along the way, fooled a lot of us.

MWorthington :

I think Alex's "grouping" will be another step, looking at the images in this thread. I also hope one will be able to initiate a group backup via a single click, for instance .....

Alex Pankratov :

May 07, 2016

it slipped in along the way,

I beg your pardon. It was done in one of the early betas back in 2013 - https://bvckup2.com/wip/13072013

Bamit :

Alex, is it possible it had something to do with the precision mouse issue you recently discovered?
If you say yes, then I can keep my dignity and not look like such a fool.  Otherwise I am sticking with my theory that I just missed the add on of this feature and just needed a brain adjustment.

jimmyt650 :

Loving this feature!
I can't wait! :)

My 2 cents would be:
Collapsed: https://bvckup2.com/wip/r75-groups-r1-a.png
Expanded: https://bvckup2.com/wip/r75-groups-r4-b.png (but maybe a darker grey bar instead of the '+')

However, I am just excited for the option so anything will be good.

Will there be a "Go" option for collapsed group? So that it will run through the whole group in the order they are placed in the group? @MWorthington has asked this

MWorthington :

May 24, 2016

I guess a key part of grouping is making the different groups visible from one another. A simple use of colour/shading could be an  idea, much as using in a spreadsheet. Not necessarily different colours for all groups, but alternate ones to define them

jimmyt650 :

Would the existing horizontal lines that are there now would make it easy to see the different groups?

Please see my mock up of the collapsed and expanded groups:
http://i162.photobucket.com/albums/t265/jimmyt650/Backup2_zpsypmpfsaj.jpg

More ideas:
-Be able to see how many jobs are in the group (in image)
-See when the oldest backup was run in the group tile (and maybe in settings to have the option to show then the most recent was run instead?) (in image)
-To be able to run through all the backups in the group (ie when you press go for the group tile it will run through the order in the group)
-(assuming this is already the way) be able to drag and drop into the groups

:) let me know what you guys think? (Sorry, I am super excited for this grouping feature)

MWorthington :

May 24, 2016

I think colours or shading would be clearer

How can i group backups ? I could not find more details regarding this on the forum so far ... ?

Alex Pankratov :

This is not done yet.

Hi Alex,

Looks like busy days with Bvckup 2 :)

Thought I'd continue this thread rather than start an another ... on the subject of grouping, and somewhat ties in with https://www.bvckup2.com/support/forum/topic/1087 (Ignore folders instead of exclude ....)

I often find myself wanting to backup one drive to another, but want to ignore a number of folders. This would give me one, simple job.

The added complexity of destination scan filters puts me off, so I create 5 or 6 jobs, each dedicated to a folder, and run them concurrently.

Grouping these to a "single job" would clear the clutter on the screen (I would imagine have the group job at the top with all the individual jobs out of the way somewhere below).

Has there been any more thoughts on this, please?

Regards,

Mark

(Mark, give me until the end of today to reply)

MWorthington :

No problem ...

To add to this, while we're thinking .... I have situations where I want to select files etc from a number of different locations and back them up to a specific location. For instance, I may want 20 files from 7 different folders, backed up to folder with 4 sub-folders. At present, depending on the situation, I would have top create up to 7 jobs and them run them concurrently.

I guess I'm wondering if there's a way to create a job, "store it", select the next "backup from", backup to", store it, etc. It would appear as one big job, with a selection of source and target folders etc.

Just thinking aloud ....

Mark

Alright, so. For your type of use case a better option would be to add support for splicing backups into existing (populated) folders. That is, the engine would keep track what it ever copied into destination folder and will automatically ignore everything else that might be there.

This is an altogether different mode of operation, it's more prone to human errors and it maps onto a different UI interaction, messaging, etc. As such it's not something that can be easily added into the program, leave alone in a way that won't complicate things. In fact, that's the biggest issue I have with this feature - the complexity it adds to the user experience.

*  There's a thread from 2013 on this [1], so that should give an idea on how comfortable I am with implementing this.

Backup grouping is of a similar nature in a sense that's it's a LOT of work with some nasty edge cases, but at least all the complexity lies with the implementation and it doesn't spill onto user's experience at all.

So the grouping will be done, but it's not at the top of the todo list.

select files etc from a number of different locations and back them up to a specific location.

I can see how this can be useful, but it's a niche use case, so I don't think this belongs to bvckup2.

OK, read and understood.

Homer712 :

Could a possible feature of the proposed grouping be the ability to backup specific groups. Currently, the tray icon right click menu only includes "Backup everything" and "Disable all backups."

For example the right click could bring up:
Backup Everything
Disable All Backups
Backup Selected Group

Now, if the right click tray icon menu could include the groups as we've named them, that would really be something:
Backup Everything
Disable All Backups
Backup Group A
Backup Group B
Backup Group C

It's only a few extra lines of code, right (If I knew how to do one of those smiley face things, it would be here)

Alex Pankratov :

Sep 13, 2018

To be honest, I don't think this belongs to the system tray menu. At least not by default. I made a note however, perhaps we'll have this as an advanced override.

one of those smiley face things
