Beta Release 23

Improvements / fixes

1. Reworked how exclusive backup mode works. Previously, if an item was included due to being checked in a tree widget, it'd be a final decision. So, for example, it wasn't possible to (easily) exclude *.exe from included C:\Temp folder.

New logic is explicit rules are now scanned and applied *always*.

2. Matching of file/folder attributes now works as previously advertised.

3. Also, deleting read-only files and folders works as it should. Duh :)

4. Trimming of the working set is now completely off by default.

I was tempted by improving (what is essentially) a vanity metric and I should've resisted the urge. Trimming of the working memory set does indeed help reduce the "memory usage" as seen in the Task Manager, but at the expense of UI freezing up when trying to display a log of a very large backup job (because the log data needs to be swapped in from a page file where Windows tucks it when the app trims its working set). And, more importantly, all this does NOT affect the effective memory usage of the program. WS may grow and shrink in size, but the growth is superficial as it will be as easily reversed by the Windows memory manager if another app needs more RAM. The true metric is "Private bytes".

Hi Alex, If you have time:

1. Can you explain what the Options/Preferences/Enable Concurrrent Backups does? If I run 2 or 3 backups concurrently, I get an error saying "Busy making another snapshot. Try again in a moment". Snapshot NOT taken.

2. If I had to totally re-install Bvckup, exactly what steps must I take to also restore all my backups and settings? (I still think us non-technical users need a "Backup" and "Restore" feature.

3. You mentioned that we would be able to re-order or sort backups in this version - is it here and if so, how does it work.

Finally, I believe that this is an ideal programme for non-technical users (I am always getting calls from friends about backing up their essential files) so my "suggestion" is that you shouldn't shy away from making the GUI cosmetically user-friendlier.

P.S. Whoo Hoo! I am always exited to see an update. The first thing I do every morning is to rush and check if there is an update. :))

Hi. This morning I found all the backups were showing an error  saying "Busy making another snapshot. Try again in a moment". Snapshot NOT taken.

I unticked the Options/Preferences/Enable Concurrrent box, re-strated the programme and all the errors disappeared.

How does the Backup Scheduling option "No backups after a reboot for 10 minutes" work?

I have a daily scheduled job set to run 8:30am.  I start up / boot up my computer around 9:55am next day.  I see that the bvckup job ran as soon as the computer started to "catch up" for the missed scheduled run.  Shouldn't the job wait for 10 minutes in this instance before running?

@Jadag -

1. "Enable concurrent backups" controls whether Bvckup would run more than one backup in parallel when it needs to. If it's unchecked, backups will form a FIFO (first in, first out) queue while waiting for a currently running backup to complete. A queued backup can be forced to run by clicking on Go if need be.

When multiple backups are run in parallel and if they happen to start at about the same time, then it will likely to cause the error you are seeing, but the error comes from Windows Volume Shadow Copying service. I don't know if it will happen *always* nor do I know what are the exact conditions for triggering it. VSS is a black box that sometimes just happens to act up or even fall apart entirely.

2. Yes, you mentioned it before and I agree that an option for saving/restoring Bvckup's own config is a good idea. To do it manually, you need to back up the contents of the  %LocalAppData%\Bvckup2 directory. You probably want to omit .log files and you may also omit "delta" directories inside of engine\backup-xxx folders as these can grow quite big.

3. Reordering works in BR23 by manually setting conf.ui_position in backup's settings.ini file to the desired position on the list. So you'd set it to 1 for the backup that you want to appear at the top of the list, 2 for the one below it, etc. Of course, make sure the app is not running while editing the .ini's or your changes will be over-written.

However, do check this out - https://bvckup2.com/wip/13072013 :)

@pjb - it's a bug, it should've waited for 10 minutes :-/
I will have a look.

Alex Pankratov :

@JacobMoreagles - FWIW there were no changes to the VSS code in past few releases. Let me look closer at your error dump and see if I can find something out.

Deipotent :

Jul 15, 2013

Changing "What to backup" settings of existing real-time job should force rescan on saving/updating the job. eg. suppose I create a job to backup a single file in a folder, then change "What to backup" to include Everything in the folder. Bvckup should immediately re-scan source and backup all other files in the folder.

Deipotent :

Jul 15, 2013

I cancelled a backup job to a USB2 drive approx. 1.4GB into copying a 4GB file, and the cancelling stage took over a minute to complete, stuck on saving delta state.

Alex Pankratov :

@Deipotent - OK, both noted.
